Eight-Year-Old Girl Muay Thai Boxers In Thailand Are A Thing

$

0

This is terrifying for so many reasons.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE UNDERGROUND CHILDREN MUAY THAI BOXING CIRCUITS IN THAILAND?! WHAT THE HELL?!

OK, sorry for screaming, but this is insane. A new documentary called Buffalo Girls goes inside the world of child blood sport by following two 8-year-old girls who compete in Muay Thai matches as a way of earning money for their families. This underground circuit apparently has upwards of 30,000 participants, many of whom (OBVIOUSLY!) endure serious injuries. Now Thailand is a poor country, and these families are struggling for money, but some things seem to cross the line of "Oh, it's just a different culture" acceptability. Adults surrounding a ring, waving money as two children beat the shit out of each other is DEFINITELY one of those things.

This is Stam, one of the two 8-year-olds the movie follows.

Carmelo Anthony Is Helping Out With Sandy Relief In Red Hook

The Knicks' oft-criticized star should get nothing but praise for this.

Things are looking great for the Knicks right now. They're the NBA's last undefeated team, and divisive star Carmelo Anthony can be found in Red Hook, helping with Sandy relief.

The Knicks didn't have a game last night or tonight, so this is the perfect time for Carmelo to get out and do some good in his city. (For perspective, the Knicks opened their season last Friday and then played Sunday and in Philadelphia on Monday, so Melo hasn't had a ton of free time lately.)

Also, it looks like Melo's having a much more positive storm-related experience than his injured teammate, Amar'e Stoudamire.

21 Kobe Bryants Who Definitely Got Mike Brown Fired

The Lakers have parted ways with head coach Mike Brown only five games into the season.

After a 1-4 start, Mike Brown has been fired by the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Sam Amick of USA Today Sports. This comes only a few days after Kobe Bryant initially expressed support for the embattled coach, but a day after video of Kobe giving Brown a death stare circulated on the web. Kobe claims he still supported Brown, but with today's firing, that seems unlikely. Chances are, if Kobe wanted Mike to have more time, Mike would have had more time.

But he didn't, so here are 21 Kobe Bryants Who Definitely Got Mike Brown Fired.

Golfer With A Nagging Conscience Shows What Sportsmanship Is All About

This kind of honesty is both difficult and rare. Wow.

Blayne Barber: Class act.

Image by Ian MacNicol / Getty Images

Blayne Barber is an amateur golfer who has spent years working towards getting onto the PGA Tour. Last week he competed in the first round of a series of events called "Q School" that allow golfers to work towards getting their tour card, with which they can compete on the highest stage and for the most money. Barber played well at the first tournament, and easily passed into the next round. But even days after the event, something didn't sit right with him.

In the tourney's second round, on the 13th hole, Barber felt that he had brushed a leaf in the bunker. His caddy assured him that he hadn't, but Barber couldn't in good conscience just move on. He assessed himself a one-stroke penalty and continued playing. (Golf is a sport where you score and penalize yourself. The honor code is the order of the day.) Unfortunately, the penalty for such an infraction is two strokes, but as his caddy continued to assure him that the leaf had never moved in the first place (and that therefore even the one-stroke penalty was unnecessary). Barber continued and eventually finished the rest of the tournament.

Image by Ian MacNicol / Getty Images

But over the days that followed that tourney, Barber couldn't shake the guilt that weighed on his conscience. He gave Golfweek a look inside his thinking: “I continued to pray about it and think about it, and I just did not have any peace about it. I knew I needed to do the right thing. I knew it was going to be disqualification.”

So Barber did just that. He called the PGA and disqualified himself for signing an inaccurate scorecard. The worst part? Barber finished five strokes below the cut line. Even if he had assessed himself the two-stroke penalty, he would have comfortably moved on. But Barber doesn't seem to have any regrets.

“I just feel peace about it,” Barber told Golfweek. “Doing the right thing and doing what I know is right in my heart and in my conscience is more important than short-term success.”

The Dallas Mavericks Cheerleaders' New Uniforms Raise Eyebrows

“You can see the sides of their bodies! This is an outrage!”

(AP)

The Dallas Maverick cheerleaders' new outfits have been getting a lot of press both foreign and stateside. Why? Because they're so damn skimpy, of course. But are they? When I first saw the photos, they didn't seem the least bit controversial. In fact, with the piece of fabric down the middle, they seem far less revealing than most. But I am a member of the hallowed fourth estate, so I couldn't take that on faith. I needed to see cold, hard facts. Time to compare:

According to HuffPo UK, Tom Daley and other Olympians were asked to "gyrate" to Basement Jaxx. (Of course this was all for charity.)

During the photo shoot, he told Radio Times he's "not a great dancer" aside from the "Daley Ghetto Slut Drop." While there is no video from the shoot, we can only guess what his move looks like based on that time performed a lip dub to LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It."

We Need To Stop Wasting Usain Bolt

$

It's time for a Triple Crown of Speed.

The man. The myth. The guy whose prime we're wasting.

Image by David Gray / Reuters

Usain Bolt is the greatest sprinter the world has ever seen. Period. Full stop. End of discussion. Other things people say when they are trying to emphasize a point. He routinely beats the best runners on the planet without seeming to empty his tank. He's such an athletic freak of nature that a simple Google search brings up speculation that he could play in the NFL, suit up for Manhcester United, and win the long jump (an event in which he doesn't currently compete) at the Rio Olympics in 2016 (Bolt himself has expressed interest in this one). Hell, when you begin searching "Can Usain Bolt Outrun..." this is what you see.

(By the way, people trying to answer these questions always assume he'd be racing an average animal. Shouldn't he be racing the fastest bear/dog/lion? The Usain Bolt of dogs? To be the best, you have to beat the best!)

The motive behind these questions is clear: People want more Usain Bolt. They want to see Usain Bolt so much they would watch him race a dog. (Wouldn't you?) We want to see Bolt do what he was born to do — run really fucking fast in one of the most thrilling events in sports. We would pay to see it, in the sense that we would tolerate watching a bunch of ads leading up to a ten-second race in which he was competing. Why do we have to wait another four years to do this?

Usain Bolt doesn't technically take four-year breaks, of course. Olympic sprinters (and other track and field athletes) compete in what is called the Diamond League (formerly known as the Golden League before the United States, China, and Qatar began hosting meets alongside European contries). On September 7th, a month after reaffirming his greatness in London, Bolt ran in the Diamond Race (the league's finale) in Brussels. The title came down to Bolt, his countryman Nesta Carter, and American Ryan Bailey. Whichever of them took the final would take the title. It was as dramatic a set-up a race could hope for, and featured Bolt at the height of his popularity, and yet it was only broadcast on the Universal Sports Network. A station that you most likely do not have, and if you do, is buried deep on your dial. Though to USN's credit it was broadcast live. Unfortunately, that meant you'd have to be watching TV at 2:45 p.m. ET on a Friday to see Bolt win.

The Future Folk Heroes Of College Basketball

Names like Juan Dixon, Jameer Nelson, Stephen Curry, and Jimmer Fredette instantly make you think of the college-basketball underdog. So who'll be this year's unlikely breakout star?

D.J. Cooper — Ohio University, 6'0'' PG, Senior

D.J. Cooper — Ohio University, 6'0'' PG, Senior

D.J. Cooper is already something of a legend in Athens, OH.; the fiery point led the Bobcats to a Sweet Sixteen last year and spearheaded then 14-seed Ohio's first-round tourney upset of Georgetown in 2010. He's got the Ohio assist record, is one away from the steals record and boasts a super-pretty 14.6 points, 6.3 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.4 steals line for his career.

D.J. and his family also made plenty of noise with allegations that Tennessee and Baylor tried to swipe him (illegally) from Ohio before the '10-'11 season, the point at which D.J. swore allegiance to coach Jim Groce and became a mid-conference media darling. Groce is off to Illinois, but if Cooper's got another run in him under former Kent State coach Jim Christian, he's definitely one of those guys who could ruin a spring weekend for fans of a top seed.

Could He Be a Star in the NBA?: Nah. Cooper is probably too small and too poor a shooter.

Folk Hero Potential: Like Stephen Curry going into his junior year, Cooper's already there — see the attached documentary the Athens news station made about him — but one more tourney run could cement his status at Ohio's GOAT.

15 People Driven To Murderous Rage By Fantasy Football Problems

Yahoo, one of the biggest fantasy football platforms, went down earlier today just before the 1 p.m. games. People are not happy.

People really care about fantasy football. Often, they have money on it. Sometimes, they have a lot of money on it. And Deadspin noticed earlier today that Yahoo, one of the most popular fantasy providers, was having serious problems, preventing users from setting their lineups. In general, people are mad. But some people are really, really mad, to the point where the cold release of homicide seems the only option left. There are a few varieties of murderous rage being caused by Yahoo today.

The first group: people who want to murder Yahoo. Which, as a website, is not something that can be murdered, per se.

23 People Who Think The Lakers' New Coach Is Named "Mike Dan Tony"

The Lakers hired Mike D'Antoni, formerly of the Suns and Knicks, to be their new head coach. It's a tricky name to spell.

Image by Kathy Willens, File / AP

Say hi to Mike D'Antoni. Before being kicked to the curb by the R-rated buddy comedy that is James Dolan and Carmelo Anthony, Mike D'Antoni coached the Knicks and, more successfully, the Phoenix Suns. With the Suns, D'Antoni and point guard Steve Nash led one of the greatest offenses the league has ever seen, and with the two reunited in Los Angeles — plus Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, and Pau Gasol — basketball nerds are ecstatic. (For more on why this is smart, read this.)

There's one coach who's even better than Mike D'Antoni, though. Mike Dan Tony.

No human being in history has been named Mike Dan Tony, except for me after I legally change my name to Mike Dan Tony later today.

Over the weekend, the Olympian competed for the first time since the London Games — meaning he was finally back in a (revealing) Speedo.

Ryan Lochte was back in the water for the Minneapolis Grand Prix. According to Sports Illustrated, the swimmer swam the 200 individual medley and the 200 backstroke walked away with five wins "during the first races of the six-meet series."

But his speedo was the main attraction.
